Asbestos air-monitoring

Asbestos air monitoring is a measure of the concentration of asbestos fibres present in the air.

Asbestos fibres may become airborne when asbestos containing materials are damaged or disturbed during home renovation or professional builders undertaking commercial projects.

The risk to health occurs when people are exposed to airborne asbestos which are inhaled and may lodge in the lower part of the lung where chronic respiratory disease such as asbestosis, or lung cancer may result.

Air-monitoring is recommend during removal of all asbestos materials, particularly during asbestos removal from the interior of an family home or occupied building.

Air-monitoring should also be undertaken during removal of all types of asbestos from ‘sensitive sites’ such as schools, child care centres, hospitals and aged care facilities.

Asbestos air-monitoring is required during friable asbestos removal. Friable asbestos materials are defined as ‘able to be reduced to power or dust by hand pressure’ and as a result readily release airborne asbestos fibres.

Friable asbestos materials include; patterned vinyl floor sheet with a friable asbestos backing, pipe lagging, sprayed 'limpet' insulation and some Vermiculite based ceiling finishes.
