Division 5 asbestos audit

The purpose of a Division 5 asbestos survey is the identification and safe management of asbestos materials in the workplace. All occupied workplaces, whether they are commercial, industrial, retail or government are required to have an asbestos register available to employers, employees and contractors working at the premises.

The workplace survey involves Asbestos Safety West conducting a visual inspection of all external and internal building areas. Where materials suspected of containing asbestos are identified, the consultant will collect samples for laboratory analysis. Materials confirmed as asbestos by analysis, or materials thought to contain asbestos are recorded in an asbestos register.

The asbestos register records information about the asbestos identified during the survey, including the location, type, ‘friability’ (soft or bonded), condition, an assessment of risk and control recommendations.

Whether they are an employer, building owner or property management company, the person with control or management of the workplace must provide an asbestos register.

For example, if an owners' corporation manages the common areas of a residential, commercial, retail, industrial or mixed use property development, an asbestos register is required for the common areas.

Asbestos Safety West recommends the development of an Asbestos Management Plan at sites where the presence of asbestos is a risk to persons at the workplace.
